My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Adult References
One of the shows that we have started watching with the Geek Baby is My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. Now first of all this is a very different My Little Pony than I grew up with. At the same time the show is definitely entertaining and something that I can kind of understand why adults would be willing to watch it as well.
One of the best parts about the show are the mostly subtle adult references that the kids don’t get, but definitely reveal some of the geek fandoms of the creators and artists. It is so great when a show can be good for kids and adults at the same time.
Discord, the Q of My Little Pony
One of my favorite moments so far has been the introduction of Discord, a creature of chaos that tries to destroy the Pony land. Of course the brilliant thing is that Discord is not only played by John De Lancie, but is the My Little Pony version of Q. Discord uses chaos to throw the Ponies off and separate them from each other. Add the actions that he takes with Q’s voice and it might as well be an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Another of the big references that I noticed was there was an episode where they ended up going to a bowling alley and we get a glimpse of pony versions of the Big Lebowski. The detail they put in to the ponies to represent the characters from that movie is pretty incredible. It makes you wonder whether they chose to do an episode in a bowling alley just to make that happen.
Other Geek References
These are not the only geeky references and some of them are more obvious than others. It is amazing to see when a creator’s fandoms shine through in their creation. It gives the audience a glimpse under the hood and lets you see the type of people that are creating the show.
